Jaylen at 19 months

Jaylen is absolutely hilarious now days. I've had it in my mind that I really needed to record some of Jaylen's obsessions, reasons for time-outs, and just what he's learning right now.

Jaylen's Top 5 Obsessions

1. THE FREAKIN' VACUUM!! Jaylen is obsessed!!!!!!! Its hilarious! As soon as he wakes up he points out the door and says "vacuum, vacuum, vacuum!" The funny thing about the vacuum is, he's also terrified of it. The minute I get close to it and go to turn it on, he freaks out and needs to sit on the couch. If I'm not using it, you better bet he's staring at it in the closet, getting twisted up in the cord, or taking the attachments on and off. I should count how many times I hear the word vacuum from his mouth in 1 day. He has the cutest way of saying it too. He'll yell it, come over to me and whisper it in my ear, say it in a scary voice.. endless ways of saying the same thing over and over.

This is probably awful of us, but it really cracks us up and it works! We discovered that the ONLY way to get Jaylen to sit still for more than a few seconds is to simply bring the vacuum out of the closet and set it there. (He's kind of outgrown his fear of it when its not on recently... but the past month this worked). Aaron had something to do one day and needed a couple minutes uninterrupted. He pulled the vacuum out and Jaylen sat still for 10 minutes. Do what you can to stay sane sometimes?! We've joked that we need to find a vacuum costume to put him in for Halloween this year...

2. Doing whatever Daddy does. Jaylen loves to put Q-tips in his ears like he sees Aaron do in the morning. Its really cute. He puts them in and continues to walk around and play with them dangling out of his ears. He's great at mimicking now days, so he often imitates us at the best times.

3. FOOD. This kid is a tank. He eats and eats and eats. He also has found a new love with Ranch, or probably anything that can be dipped into. I am constantly pulling out snacks and making food for him to eat. The ladies in child care at work tell me about how he rummages through other kids bags to eat their treats and hes always in the high chair when I go to get him (Even after a full breakfast and eating his own treats!). One lady suggested I start a savings account entirely for a food fund when he's older. Might not be a bad idea!

4. Doing it by himself. He's getting to be a rather independent little man. Loves to eat things by himself, without any help making the pieces smaller by mom or dad. Very promptly says "No" at any hint of being helped at times.

5. Phones and cords. Phones has been on his obsession list for awhile. He loves to act like (and really) talk on our cellphones. He jabbers and jabbers like crazy. I love it, its really sweet. To my dismay he LOVES playing with cords and trying to unplug and plug things in the outlet. It drives me nuts because one of these days I'm afraid he'll get hurt, and there is only so much child proofing I can do.. so that leads me to:

TIME-OUT
Jaylen's in time-out usually for one of the following:
- Climbing on the dishwasher to get on the counter
- Throwing balls over the deck (he's getting much better on this one)
- Playing with cords by the outlets
- Fits because he can't quite get something to do something the way he wants

He's a happy, active kid- so I feel lucky we don't have to use time-out too much. Its just the same thing he goes into time-out for, over and over again.

Another adorable thing he's picked up doing the past week or so, is saying "Mommy" in the cutest way ever and all the time. Whenever he's playing, waking up, or I'm out of his line of sight he yells, "Mommy!" in the sweetest little way. If he's really hungry and I'm cooking, I'll pick him up and he'll say "Oh mommy..." I just can't even describe how cute this is to me. I hope I can catch him doing it on video sometime. Its really sweet.

He still is super snuggly. He randomly stops playing and comes and sits by me on the couch and pulls a blankie up over us. Or lays his head on my belly, or lays his head on my shoulder. I love it! We loves snuggles from our little boy!

Recently after training someone I took Jaylen out to the pool to play. He was splashing around while I laid out on the side watching him. He comes crawling out of the pool, lays down belly down like I am right next to me, gets a huge smile on his face and starts jabbering like he's telling me the best story ever. It really melted my heart. He is such a sweet little boy. It makes me excited to see him grow older and be able to actually understand what he's saying and have a sweet relationship like I feel like we have now. He is one fun kid!

I'm on a boat!

We had a fun day trip to Elephant Butte lake with the Collins (I train Steve and Ellie). It was a blast! Steve and Ellie sure have some fun kids; Sarah (14), Emily (19) and Julian (19) and Zoe (13) who also came! Jaylen loved the boat (after getting used to it first!) and we sure had fun hanging on for dear life to the tube. It was a gorgeous day and the water felt great! Jaylen loved playing in the water and sand on the shore. It was sure fun to get together with the Collins!

Our first ride out- Jaylen burst into tears, but as soon as he was held he was doing fine!

Steve letting Jaylen steer..

Aaron and Jaylen going out for a run.

Jaylen had the best boat hair! (Ace Ventura hair!)

What a crazy ride this was...

If the boat went too slow, it'd put us backwards like so. It was quite the ab workout for Ellie and I. Steve was trying to make sure he wasn't going too fast since we had Jaylen, but this was quite the opposite of what we were thinking!

What a fun, fun day! We're glad to have such awesome friends to spend it with!

1 little monkey jumping on the bed....

This video is from one of our first nights in our new place. We put Jaylen down for bed and heard him banging around in his room.. We went in to find him jumping in his bed and he was pretty excited about it. What a fun, silly boy we have!

Labor Day at the Aquarium/Zoo

We had a ton of fun today at the Aquarium/Zoo. None of us have been to the aquarium yet, and I got a yearly pass on Friday, so we decided to go today and see how it was. Words can't describe how hilarious it was to watch Jaylen as soon as we walked into that place. He was between tanks, jabbering and pointing like crazy, had the widest eyes I've ever seen. It was so adorable. I thought he'd like it since he enjoyed the fish at the zoo, but wow... he was sure excited about it all. It was fun watch Jaylen go crazy and enjoy it so much together. We took a fun train ride over from the Aquarium to the Zoo. On our way back over on the train, saw two male elephants in quite the scuffle- it was pretty fun to watch!

Jaylen on the child play area at the zoo..

It was a hot, hot day, so we were happy they had a little splash pad at the zoo. Jaylen of course, LOVED!

Jaylen admiring the sea turtle at the Aquarium..

The shark tank

Jaylen scoping out the fish as we first walked in..

Jaylen was all over this tank! It even had a little nook of glass that jetted out into the tank that we sat Jaylen in- he wasn't too sure what to think about being "in" the tank, but he quickly was distracted by some colorful fish that swam by.

Jaylen watching the sting-rays.

GO BYU!

We loved watching the BYU game against Oklahoma on Saturday! I was coloring with Jaylen during the game, and we got a little excited I guess and decided to put some BYU flair on him. It was fun to hear him do his cougar noise and say "ball, ball, balllll!" during the game.

Makin moves

We moved last Saturday to our new apartment that is WAY closer to both our works and school for Aaron. We've been here a week so far, and we LOVE it. I'll have to take some more pictures soon. A few top reasons we're really enjoying it:

1. Aaron gets home a lot sooner and can leave a lot later. We love it.
2. It has a large front porch in the front and back porch off our room. We have awesome air flow in here compared to our last place, and Jaylen LOVES being out on the porch sweeping and watching the birds/dogs/ and everything else that is outside at the time.
3. Our apartment overlooks a fun, fenced in child play place for Jaylen!
4. Tennis courts (and a B-ball court) right outside our apartment. (Tennis is our new thing now days- watching the US Open too much!)
5. Large, beautiful trees surrounding our place- way private compared to our last place.
6. Large window in the kitchen gives a great breeze and it overlooks a beautiful green, private lawn.
7. The cable guy came to hook up our cable at 11 pm on a Saturday night- we weren't happy- so we got 74 free channels! We're pretty stoked about that.
8. We're right across from the dollar theater, putt-putt golf, an amusement park, Olive Garden, Outback, and countless other fun, exciting things for us.
9. New carpet and new "hardwood" floors.

We're pretty well settled in. We love the amount of space we have and feel really fortunate to be living here!

We attended our new ward on Sunday and it should be interesting. I'm trying not to jump to any assumptions since it was right before Labor Day... but lets just say I think we have a few old folks homes in our ward. Most everyone was OLD! Fast Sunday was pretty entertaining. We'll see how it turns out. The nursery worker said Jaylen was fine, but wanted to eat treats the whole time. We got a good giggle out of that. We feed the kid non-stop and he's always looking for more!

Here's Jaylen in his cute new room.

If anyone wants to play a round of tennis, basketball, swim or play in the play area- let me know, and come on over!

Back to School- Fall 2009

Aaron is back to school at UNM in his (most likely) last year of school EVER! He has a very busy schedule this semester- he has an "immersion" internship with the Lobo's athletic department, where he works every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday during the day. He seems to be enjoying it so far. The way I understand it is- every 6 weeks or so they'll move him to a new department within athletics so he'll get a complete understanding of all the areas he could be working in, and will also get him alot of different references for future jobs prospects. After his days at his internship he attends class from 4- 6:30 on those nights. The other 3 days of the week, besides Sunday, he is still working spraying pest control at his previous job. He is one busy guy and we are so grateful he works so hard for us!!
